The critically endangered and rare Mellblom spider orchid grows only in a small area next to Alcoa’s Portland, Victoria Australia smelter.
In 1998 there were just 27 Mellbloms left. But the delicate species has been saved from extinction after the Australian Department of Sustainability and Environment produced more than 150 flowering plants and 600-plus seedlings in 1994. |
